Specific Gravity: 0,75 g/cm³.
Evergreen tree that can reach 50-60 metres tall, with a wide crown, and a very thick trunk, with straight bark, which is white with shades of brown or red, and it comes off in panels with the years. With alternate, petioulous, pendulous greyish-green leaves. Young ones have oval or spearhead shape, and the adult ones are line-spearhead shaped, from 8 to 30 cms long, with the tip a bit bent. Inflorescences in umbels of 7-11 crown-shaped flowers, with many white-yellow stamens. It blooms in April-July. The fruit is inside a cupola-shaped capsule with a printed operculum of 5-8 milimetres long.Cultivation and uses: It propagates from seed. It is quite resistant to desert heat or cold, and it grows fast. It resists the presence of lime on the ground to a certain extent, but its excess provokes chlorosis on it. It is suitable for timber production. Due to its fast growing and aggressiveness it is not recommended for gardens or near buildings. It needs wide spaces to be able to grow free. Botanical Name: Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn. Syn.- E. rostrata Schlecht. = E. longirostrix F.v.M. Commercial Names: .- Spanish: Eucalipto rojo. .- English: Red river gum. .- French: Eucaliptus rouge. .- Italian: Eucalitto rosso. .- German: Rote Eukalyptus. Vernacular Names: Australia: Murray red gum, Blue gum. Origin and availability: It can be originally found in Australia. Plantations have been made in Morocco, Spain, Madagascar, South Africa, Angola and Brazil. In Spain it can be found in Andalucia and Extremadura. There are relevant plantations, production and exportation. Wood description: The colour of the wood is reddish, and gets darker as it grows older. The growing rings are very visible, and are usually quite open. The xylem rays are visible, very fine and they have a straight course. The fibre is wavy and slightly interlocked. The grain is fine. The wood presents gum galls. Physical Properties: Density: 740-760 kg/m³ Shrinkage: Partially nervous. Shrinkage coefficient: total (unit) .- Volumetric: 16,8% (0,44-0,58) .- Tangential: 5,0% (0,16) .- Radial: 3,0% (0,09) Hardness: 4,4 Semi-hard Mechanical Properties: Faultless wood (UNE): .- Static Deflection: 112 N/mm² .- Modulus Of Elasticity: 6.800-7.950 N/mm² .- Axial Compression: 48,5-55 N/mm² .- Perpendicular Compression: 13, 6 N/mm² .- Shear: 15,3 N/mm² (ASTM) .- Dynamic Deflection: 3.0 J/cm2 Natural Durability and Impregnability: Its timber is classified as resistant to the attack of termites and sea xylophagous organisms. The duramen is not impregnable and the alburnum is impregnable. Drying: Its drying must be carefully carried out. The gum galls may cause deformations. Technological Properties: This timber is difficult to saw, due to the interlocked grain and the gum galls. Saws get usually blunt. It is valid to obtain veneer by peeling and sliced veneer. The machining is difficult, since it presents problems due to the interlocked grain and the gum galls. When brushing, the recommended cutting angle is 20º. It requires a treatment of the surface before glueing, to avoid the resin action over the glue. Nailing and screw driving require prior drilling. Finishing gives no problems. Uses: .- Veneer by peeling and sliced veneer. .- Parquet. .- Poles. .- Mine timber. .- Marine environment buildings. .- Turnery. .- Carving. .- Paper pulp. |
