Specific Gravity: 0,44 g/cm³.This tree belongs to the Silica family. Although several types of it grow spontaneously in several countries of mild climates, it is also harvested in plantations to obtain its wood. -The poplar wood is white, though it may sometimes also be found in pale pink or beige tones; It usually has a straight grain, and a uniform and fine texture. –It dries well and it is quite stable, and even though it is quite light and therefore not very strong, it is hard, and does not crack easily. It is easy to work with, even though a good finishing cannot be achieved. –Its waterproof level is very high. –It is commercially quite relevant, and it is used in carpentry and for light structures, floorboards, boxes, kitchen tools, plywoods, music instruments, cellulose pulp, handicraft, toys, matches, sticks, etc... Botanical Name: Populus deltoides Marsh. Syn.- P. monilifera = P. canadensis Populus trmuloides Michx. Vernacular Names: North America: Cottonwood, Eastern cottonwood, Eastern poplar, Carolina Poplar (P. deltoides), Aspen, Trembling aspen. Quaking aspen (P. tremuloides). Origin and availability: It can be found in North America. Its afforestation, production and exportation are very relevant. Commercial Names: .- Spanish: Chopo americano (P. deltoides), Alamo temblón americano (P. tremuloides). .- English: Eastern cottonwood (P. deltoides), Quaking aspen, Canadian aspen (P. tremuloides). .- French: Peuplier américaine (P. deltoides), Peuplier fauxtremble americain (P. tremuloides). .- Italian: Pioppo americano (P. deltoides), Pioppo tremulo americano (P. tremuloides). .- German: Amerikanische Pappel (P. deltoides), Amerikanische Zitterpappel (P. tremuloides). Wood Description: The colour of the alburnum (Sapwood) is off-white and the duramen (Heartwood) varies from greyish-white to grey-brown. The alburnum occupies a wide area and gradually mixes with the duramen until both cannot be distinguished from each other. The annual growing rings are visible. The grain is straight and fine. The green (unripe) wood has an unpleasant smell. Physical Properties: Density: 450-470 kg/m³ Light. Contraction: Not many nerves. Shrinkage Coefficient (ASTM): total (unit) .- volumetric: 12-13% .- tangential: 7-9% .- radial: 4% Hardness: (very soft). Mechanical Properties: Faultless Wood (ASTM): .- Static Deflection: 58,6 N/mm² .- Modulus of Elasticity: 9.500 N/mm² .- Axial Compression: n/a .- Perpendicular Compression: 1,4 N/mm² .- Shear: 6,4 N/mm² .- Dynamic Deflection: n/a Drying: Drying: It must be dried very carefully, since water bags, collapses or rift cracks may appear. The P Deltoides has also risks that distortions may happen. The recommended drying schedules for the P. Deltoides are the T10-F5 (4/4) and theT8-F4 (8/4) for the normal wood, and the T8-D5(4/4) and T6-C4 (8/4) for very humid pieces, all of them of the FPLM, andfor the P. Tremuloides the T12-E7 (4/4) y la T10-E6 (8/4) del FPLM y la 'E' (4/4) of the PRL. Natural Durability and Impregnability: The wood is generally classified as non-durable to the xylophagous organisms action. The duramen is little impregnable and the alburnum is partially impregnable. Technological Properties: Sawing is easy, although it tends to tear apart. The cutting angle of the saw teeth corresponds to the soft woods, and it is 50º, and the recommended clearance angle is 12º. It is valid for the obtaining of veneer by peeling and sliced veneer. This wood is difficult to brush because of its softness, and it also presents difficulties on turning, drilling or chiselling. It glues well. With nailing or screw driving the result is fairly good. About the finish, there are some problems with the dyeing, since absorption is quite irregular. Uses: .- Food containers and packing. .- Plywood. .- Decorative veneer sheets: special logs or flitches. .- Paper pulp. .- Fibreboard. .- Furniture: interiors. .- Sticks. .- Matches. .- Music instruments. .- Wood wool for special packaging. |
